In 1989, Sink Combs Dethlefs began design on the Dal Ward Athletic Center at the University of Colorado at Boulder. As project architect, Andy Barnard began his career in sports architecture. In 1993, he became a partner in the firm and in 2009 became President. Andy’s expertise is wide ranging, encompassing community recreation centers and amphitheaters to private residences and collegiate athletic training centers. Among his favorite accomplishments are the award-winning designs for the Stephen C. West Ice Arena in Breckenridge, the University of Wyoming Rochelle Athletics Center, and the Colorado School of Mines Student Recreation Center & Lockridge Arena. His work at the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs and at Pepperdine University are among his favorite projects as well.
Andy is a collaborator. He has extensive experience working with large groups on projects. He listens carefully to the input of administrators, staff, community or campus stakeholders, and user groups to understand the planning and design issues that will lead to successful projects.
Having graduated with honors from Montana State University and subsequently from the University of Texas at Austin with his Masters in Architecture, Andy is now NCARB certified and licensed in twenty states and provinces.
